When working with electric circuits and appliances, there are usually two options, MCB and RCCB. 

They have similar purposes, but the question arises, what is the difference between MCB and RCCB? So, read on to know more in detail about these two circuit breakers.

## What Is An MCB? 

MCB stands for Miniature Circuit Breaker, which provides protection essential for reliability and safety if dealing with electric appliances. 

### Definition And Function Of An MCB 

The miniature circuit breaker is a modular device that can isolate the circuit if there is a short circuit or overload. MCB can sense if there is an extremely high current, then it trips immediately to avoid any circuit damage. MCBs are best suited for commercial and residential applications. 

### Types Of MCBs

Different MCB types are available such as A, B, C, D, K, and Z. But, three versions, type B, C, and D, are the key. Each type is designed to be responsive to different electric surges.

* **Type B MCB**

If the current flowing hits 3 to 5 times the recommended load, then the type B trips. 

* **Type C MCB**

Type C circuit breakers are perfect for more powerful electric surges. 

* **Type D MCB**

Type D circuit breakers only activate when the current surges between 10 and 20 times the recommended maximum.

MCB works as a better alternative than the fuse. One issue with using fuse is that they must be replaced once operated. * MCBs are reusable, which means the replacement and maintenance cost is less
* It has a better interface
* It is easy to identify the faulty zone of the electric circuit

#### Disadvantages of MCBs:

* MCB can be costly when compared to fuse

## What Is An RCCB?

RCCB stands for Residual Current Circuit Breaker. Although, according to the definition, one might not find the difference between MCB and RCCB; however, they are not the same. But before going into that, it is vital to understand RCCB. 

### Definition And Function Of An Rccb 

RCCB is also referred to as RCB or RCD circuit breaker. RCCB is a residual current protective device that monitors the electric current in commercial and residential buildings’ neutral and main lines. It is one of the safest devices to detect and trip against electrical leakage currents and prevent potential electric fires. 

This circuit breaker works quickly and it only takes around 20 milliseconds to trip.

### Types of RCCBs

There are two types of RCCBs:

* **2 Pole RCCB**

It works in a single-phase supply that only consists of a live wire and a neutral wire. 

* **4 Pole RCCB**

This RCCB is used in a 3-phase supply connection that consists of 3-phase wires and a neutral wire.

* It is impactful against earth faults and residual current
* As soon as the rate sensitivity of the circuit surpasses, RCCB gets disconnected
* It also guards against circuit variations

Regarding insensitivity, RCCB is insensitive to short circuits and overloads, and MCB is insensitive to electric shocks.

### Tripping Time

As compared to RCCBs, MCBs are not sensitive to currency fluctuations. It can take up to a relatively long time before tripping. However, RCCB can trip within 20 milliseconds and is very sensitive.

Regarding RCCB vs. MCB, current ratings play a crucial role. RCCB has current ratings of 300mA, 100mA, 30mA, and 10mA. MCBs have current trip sensitivities 6A to 125A.

MCB is easy to install than RCCB. MCB has a simple power switch that connects to the main circuit easily. However, the difference between MCB and RCCB is that RCCB has a built-in earth leakage system, so its installation is complicated.
